Should the University experience a line break in the water distribution system, it may be necessary to issue a Boil Water Advisory or Boil Water Notice. Either may be the result of a loss in pressure or from a line break where dirt or debris may have entered the distribution piping.
When issued, Boil Water Advisories or Notices are posted on exterior doors that are used to enter involved buildings if the affected portion of the distribution system is relatively small and isolated. For larger scale events, Advisories and Notices will be given to University Relations for announcement and distribution.
An Boil Water Advisory is issued when a portion of the system may be contaminated but has not yet been confirmed.
A Boil Water Notice is issued when a part of the water system has been confirmed to be contaminated.
If your building or location is affected by a Boil Water Advisory or Notice, you will be advised to boil water for at least 1 full minute prior to consuming any water (drinking or cooking) until otherwise notified by the University's Utility Services Department. In addition, any ice formed from water which has not been boiled should not be used for drinking purposes. Once tests have confirmed the absence of contaminates in the distribution lines and it is safe to remove the Boil Water Advisory or Notice, the Utilities Department will issue a Repeal and customers may resume normal use.
