Water Quality

Utility Services works hard to ensure that Clemson University's water quality meets or exceeds regulatory standards. We regularly test the water distribution system (PDF) and perform upgrades to guarantee clean water throughout campus.

Call Before You Dig

There are times when maintenance is required, and we urge groups within University Facilities as well as outside contractors to “Call Before You Dig,” to avoid unnecessary disruptions in water service or impacts to water quality. If a water line is struck and damaged, dirt and contaminants can enter the water system and repairs can be costly and time-consuming.

Prior to performing any excavation—or driving stakes, poles, or anything into the ground—you should notify SC811 of your planned excavation to prevent damage to underground utilities.

Steps for Safe Digging

  1. Request a locate. Visit SC811.com or call 811 to request utilities be located and marked at your planned work area.
  2. Wait the required amount of time indicated by SC811 to allow utilities to be located in the field. This is typically three full business days.
  3. After the required wait time, call SC811 to confirm all utilities at your work site have been located and marked.
  4. Keep marks intact. Pothole at marked utility locations until the utility is found. If markings are destroyed by construction or weather, contact SC811 to have utilities re-marked if necessary.
  5. Dig carefully around buried utilities. If a utility is damaged during excavation, have the project manager contact the Facilities Support Center at (864) 656-5450.
