Utility Services
From time to time you may see the Fire Department or Utility Services crews testing and flushing fire hydrants around campus. Although it may appear to be a waste of water, this is necessary for the proper operation and maintenance of the University's water system. Testing hydrants ensures proper flow and pressure in the event of a fire, and periodically flushing the lines helps prevent stagnation and maintains adequate disinfectant levels in the distribution system.
Note: when the water distribution system is flushed or hydrants are operated, changes in flow and velocity may temporarily cause discoloration. This is normal and not a cause for concern. The water mains remain properly disinfected throughout this process. If your tap water becomes discolored, run the cold water for a few minutes to clear the line. If it does not clear after a few minutes, please call the Facilities Support Center at (864) 656-5450 to report the condition. Our operators work to keep water as clear as possible to minimize impacts to customers.
Safety Tips During Flushing
- If driving in an area where flushing is occurring, slow down—large amounts of water may be present on the roadway.
- If traffic control is in place, follow the directions of Utility Services crews guiding traffic through the work zone.
