Maintenance Services

Fire Alarms, Fire Extinguishers, and Elevators

Certain parts of the university require specialized maintenance. There is a dedicated engineer for building elevators and the campus fire alarm system. University Facilities also ensures that all buildings have fully functional fire extinguishers and tank suppression systems through regular inspections.

Alarms, Extinguishers, and Tank Suppression Systems

Campus facilities are connected to the university fire alarm system. If you have not been informed of any tests or inspections and you hear or see an active fire alarm, please exit to a safe location away from the building. Some areas have fire panels that may show yellow indicator lights or audible trouble alarms. If you see an alert on a fire panel in your building, please call the Operations Support Center at (864) 656-5450.

All fire extinguishers on campus receive an annual inspection by a university contractor. If an extinguisher is used for any reason, it should be replaced as soon as possible. If you notice an extinguisher has lost pressure or missed its yearly inspection, notify us as soon as possible. University Facilities also provides new extinguishers upon request. In any of these cases, please submit a service request online or call Facilities Dispatch at (864) 656-5450.

Similar to fire extinguishers, tank suppression systems are located in various areas on campus (e.g., food service, chemical, or archival storage). In case of fire, these systems release a gas or powder to suppress flames quickly. If one of these systems alarms, exit the area immediately in a safe manner and report the discharge. As with extinguishers, an external university contractor performs regular inspections on all tank suppression systems.

Elevator Maintenance and Upgrades

University Facilities ensures that elevators on campus undergo regular preventative maintenance and repairs lifts that are out of service. Contracted elevator technicians respond to entrapments during working hours. Any trouble with an elevator should be reported to the Facilities Support Center as soon as possible at (864) 656-5450. If you notice a malfunction or if someone becomes entrapped after business hours, please report the problem to CUPD at (864) 656-2222. For buildings with only one elevator, an after-hours ThyssenKrupp technician will respond if the elevator is unoccupied. In buildings with two elevators, please use the working elevator and submit a service request the next day.

If you have general questions or concerns about any of the information above, please contact Evan Link at (864) 765-2670.
